United States Marshals Service Deputy U.S. Marshal Peter Hillman of the Fresno, California office of the U.S. Marshals Service was killed on June 8, 2000 when the prisoner transport van in which he was riding was struck by a tractor trailer that crossed the highway median in Bakersfield, California during a rainstorm. Several vehicles, including two tractor trailers, were involved in this fatal chain-reaction traffic accident. Deputy Hillman was a 14-year veteran of the Marshals Service at the time of his death. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice/Sociology from Fresno State University in 1976. Prior to joining the Marshals Service, Deputy Hillman served eight years with the U.S. Forest Service as a firefighter, performing law enforcement duties as well. He is survived by his father, Loren Collins Hillman; and by three siblings.
