Deputy Sheriff William Giacomo

Nicholas County Sheriffs Department, West Virginia Deputy Sheriff William G. Giacomo was shot and killed on September 11, 2000 by a parolee who had just been arrested for a DUI violation. While processing the suspect for a breathalyzer test, Deputy Giacomo paused to answer the phone. As Deputy Giacomo turned back around, the suspect displayed a small pistol that he had concealed in his boot. A struggle ensued during which the suspect shot Deputy Giacomo in the head. Deputy Giacomo was transported to a local hospital where he died later in the day. Deputy Giacomo had worked for the Gauley Bridge Police Department before joining the Nicholas County Sheriffs Department. He was also a Captain with the local fire department. He was an avid sports enthusiast and a certified diver, enjoyed the outdoors and 4-wheel mountain biking, and also loved to draw. Deputy Giacomo was a registered organ donor and able to save five lives following his untimely death. He is survived by his wife, his parents, and his sister.
