8/9/2005 Correctional Officer Wayne “Cotton” Morgan Department of Corrections, Tennessee Brushy Mountain Correctional Complex – Wartburg While Correctional Officer Wayne Morgan and Correctional Officer Larry Harris escorted their inmate back to the transport vehicle parked in the Roane County Court House parking lot and were putting the inmate in the vehicle, the inmate’s wife unlawfully and intentionally facilitated the escape of her prisoner husband by parking her vehicle directly behind the transport vehicle. As she exited her vehicle, the prisoner yelled at his wife to “shoot him!” She shot Officer Morgan and then pointed her weapon at Officer Harris. They both returned fire at each other and she was able to flee the area with the prisoner. Officer Morgan succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Officer Morgan is survived by his wife Viann, son Dennis, daughter Carla, son-in-law Tracy and grandchildren Cole and Halie.
