5/4/2000 Captain Herman Harris Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Correction C. Paul Phelps Correctional Center - DeQuincy Captain Harris was supervising an inmate work crew vaccinating several herds of cattle. The weather was turning inclement and a group rode their horses back to return to the main farm. On the way back to the farm, the horses were quite excited. Upon approaching the main barn Captain Harris lost control of his horse and when he tried stopping the horse, the horse dug in and skidded to a stop. Captain Harris flew over the horse head first into the side of the barn. He died as a result of the injuries sustained in this accident. Captain Harris is survived by his daughters Virginia Harris-Hazi, Christy, and son Herman Junior, mother June Alston and brother Kenneth Harris.
