Deputy Sheriff James P. Rutland Jefferson Davis County Sheriff's Department, Mississippi Mississippi Deputy Sheriff J. P. Rutland Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s Department was killed in the line of duty on February 21, 1997. He and his colleague, Deputy Sheriff Tommy Bourne, were shot and killed when their male prisoner managed to retrieve a concealed handgun. Deputy Sheriff Rutland, 53, had formerly served as Police Chief of Monticello, Mississippi, as a Deputy Sheriff for Lawrence County, and on the police force in Pearl, Mississippi. He is survived by his wife Linda, son James, stepson Darrell, daughter Judy, and mother Alice.
