Deputy Jailer Irvin Powell Haskell County Sheriff's Department, Kansas Kansas Deputy Jailer Irvin Powell Haskell County Sheriff’s Department was killed in the line of duty on March 19, 1995. Deputy Jailer Powell was fatally shot by inmates on a work crew during an escape attempt. Age 48, Deputy Jailer Powell had been a farmer most of his life and had served his Department full time for only four months at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Judy and six children. One of these, daughter Amber, wrote a touching poem called “Sadness” when she was 11-1/2, about a year after her father’s violent death. This poem appears on page 25 of the 3rd quarter 1996 issue of the CPO Family. Deputy Jailer Powell was among those honored at Project 2000 VII in Sacramento that year.
