Correctional Officer Mark Avery Lansing Correctional Facility, Kansas Kansas Department of Corrections Corrections Officer I Mark Avery sustained fatal head injuries when he was attacked by inmates with weights and Q -balls in the recreation building of Lansing Correctional Facility. Officer Avery’s brain stem was severed in the assault. He was kept on life support in the hospital until his organs could be harvested. Age 38, he died on May 23, 1993. Officer Avery is survived by his wife Cheryl and a total of seven children and stepchildren. He had formerly worked at Folsom State Prison in California as a dental technician, and had been a Corrections Officer for only eight months at the time of his death.
