3/5/1995 Corporal Catherine M. Crawford Monroe County Sheriff’s Department Rochester, New York While assisting deputies under her command to break up a fight between two inmates in the jail in May of 1993, Corporal Crawford sustained injuries to her hand and knee as a result of this altercation. Corporal Crawford required surgery to repair the damage to her knee but prior to the scheduled operation, Crawford experienced serious breathing difficulties. After extensive medical testing, it was determined that Corporal Crawford had developed blood clots that lodged in her lungs as a result of the injury to her knee. Surgery to remove the blood clots was ruled out due to their location. After further tests, Crawford was accepted as a candidate for a lung transplant. While awaiting the transplant, Corporal Crawford died as a result of her injuries. Corporal Crawford served her Department for 13 years. She is survived by her husband Larry, daughters Kelly and Cari and son Thomas
