Montana Detective Alex Mavity Billings Police Department, Montana Montana Detective Alex Mavity Billings Police Department was shot and killed at the age of 28 on February 14, 1989. A parolee had been arrested for a parole violation. He escaped from the patrol car and grabbed an innocent bystander in front of a bank. During the standoff the parolee obtained Detective Mavity’s firearm by grabbing for his hand, and in the ensuing gunfire Detective Mavity was shot three times. The suspect also was shot, and both he and Detective Mavity died. Detective Mavity left his wife Joyce, his daughter Alexis, and a sister.
