Mississippi Deputy Joe Cosby Panola County Jail, Mississippi Mississippi Deputy Joseph Cosby Panola County Jail was killed in the line of duty on September 30, 1988. Deputy Cosby was transporting a prisoner who was sentenced to life without parole. The prisoner managed to overpower Deputy Cosby, seize his gun and kill him. Deputy Cosby had served Panola County for 13 years. He left his wife Linda, to whom he had been married for 30 years at the time of his death, two adult children, five siblings and three grandchildren.
