Correctional Sergeant Howell “Hal” Burchfield San Quentin State Prison, California Sergeant Hal Burchfield was attacked and stabbed to death by a conspiracy of three inmates on June 8, 1985 at San Quentin State Prison. Hal’s widow, Barbara Burchfield, was the first recipient of the CPO Foundation death benefit. Barbara soon became an active, uniquely eloquent CPO Foundation Volunteer and, over time, the CPO Foundation’s Victims’ Research Analyst and a Catastrophic Assistance Coordinator.
