Correctional Officer Merle E. Clutts – October 22, 1983 United States Department of Justice – Federal Bureau of Prisons, United States Penitentiary Marion, Illinois.
Officer Clutts was killed when he was repeatedly stabbed by an inmate with a homemade prison shank. The inmate was being escorted back to his cell after having a shower when another inmate slipped him a shank. The inmate then ran down the tier and attacked Officer Clutts who he had a vendetta against. By the time the officers got the suspect off Officer Clutts and pulled Officer Clutts to safety, he had been stabbed 40 times. Officer Clutts is survived by his wife Maryjoeann, adult sons William and Mike and adult daughter Debbie, granddaughter Jodi.
